The Beginning
Indian Institute of Information Technology and Management Gwalior was established by Govt of India through a cabinet decision taken in October 1995 based on a report of a working group (May 1995) of All India Council for Technical Education(AICTE) constituted, consisting of eminent professionals, academicians and policy makers in the areas of Information Technology, Management and Communication, to deliberate on the issue of IT integration. The working group prepared a basic document underlining the need of establishing a National Centre in the area of IT.

Government of Madhya Pradesh allotted land free of cost, first at the village Sonjana, on 16th January 1996. The foundation Stone of the Institute was laid on Jan 17, 1996 by Late Shrimant Madhav Rao Scindia, the then Minister of Human Resource Development. Govt of India. The first meeting of IIITM Gwalior Society was held on 17th January 1997 at Shastri Bhavan, New Delhi. The society was registered on 30 January 1997.

Consequently, the Indian Institute of Information Technology & Management (IIITM) was established at Gwalior as a centrally funded autonomous institution registered under the Societies’ Registration Act and sprawled over 60 hectares of land to build the Institute campus. The primary objectives of the institute are to create facilities for education, training, research, consultancy and professional development in the areas of Information Technology and Management in an integrated manner. The objectives of the institute were framed so as to create facilities for education, research, consultancy and professional development in the cusp area of IT and management through seamless integration. The institute was founded to bridge the gap between the technocrats and the managers and produce the new generation of entrepreneurs

The first director Prof DP Agrawal, joined the institute in October 1998. The first course of the institute started in July 1998, PGDMIT with intake of 30 students. Subsequently PGDIT in 1999 with an intake of 15, Ph.D. Programme in July 2000 and 5-Yr. Dual degree PG programme also in July 2000. Full time faculty joined in August 1999. The institute was conferred, by the Ministry of HRD on the recommendation of the UGC, Deemed-to-be-University status in March 2001.

In the starting the classes of the institute were held in Madhav Institute of Science and Technology, Gwalior. The MITS had provided nearly 15,000 sq. feet covered area in the high voltage laboratory complex of MITS without charging a monthly rent with a proviso that the permanent fixtures created shall become the property of MITS. There after the construction of the campus the classes were shifted to institute in July 2002. In the starting the institute was named as Indian institute of information technology and management (IIITM) Gwalior. In December 2002 ABV was added to its name on the birthday of Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee, then prime minister of India by decision of Government.

Institute Campus
IIITM Gwalior Society constituted a Campus Visioning group to develop a vision for the institute campus and requirement of facilities on long-term basis. On the recommendation of the campus visioning committee, the architect was selected through a limited competition amongst architects who had, in the past, designed similar level institutions following the Architectural Council of India norms. A jury headed by Shri M.K.Kaw, then Secretary Education, Govt of India, selected M/S Suresh Goel & Associate, New Delhi as the architect for the institute.

Since the institute was to be established for providing quality education and facilities for research to act as a resource in the area of IT and Management, it was decided by the visioning group that the institute academic building must convey the spirit of excellence and radiate the message of high quality. Therefore, it was planned that all buildings would be fully wired for providing access to modern communication facilities at all places on the campus. Accordingly, the Institute building, hostel rooms and faculty residences are being completely wired with latest technology. The smart campus is being provided with the necessary facilities for all round development of students' personality.

The construction work started in January 2001 with Educational Consultants India Limited (EdCIL), a Govt of India PSU as project manager and L&T ECC as constructors.

A Campus Visioning group developed the vision for the institute campus and requirement of facilities keeping the future developments in the next decades. The smart campus, fully equipped with modern communication connectivity, is being provided with the necessary facilities for all round development of students' personality. The institute now has building infrastructure for Academics (Academic Buildings and Lecture Class Room Complex) Administration area, hostels, faculty housing and play grounds. Lecture rooms are equipped with audio-visual facilities and latest teaching aids.

IIITM is a residential institute and requires all students to stay on the campus. Separate hostels are provided for male(Three) and female(One) students. All hostels have single occupancy rooms. The hostels are self-contained, having amenities such as reading rooms, facilities for indoor games like table tennis, billiards and gymnasium and courts for Tennis, badminton, basketball, Crickets grounds etc. Each hosted has a lounge, entertainment hall and a dining hall with messing arrangements.

Student Life on Campus is vibrant enabling them to develop a holistic personality through creative activities in all aspects of life outside the classroom. Students are active in cultural and co-curricular activities. Aurora is the annual cultural festival; the three-day extravaganza is marked with a rich assortment of events designed to capture the essence of the new generation’s enthusiasm, vigor, the spirit of teamwork and excellence. Infotsav is the annual Technology and Management Festival of institute. It inculcates amongst them the spirit of the institute, i.e. quest for creativity, excellence and leadership. "Parichay" is the fresher’s welcome function to make the fresher feel at home, and to bring out their hidden talents
